Bottom line up front: I would suggest to you not to waste your money buying "Burying the Secret", it's not worth the paper on which it is written, even in the Kindle format. I almost wrote this book off as a waste of my time, but with all things negative, there's bound to be something positive--even about this book; because I bought the Kindle edition, I can delete it without feeling the guilt of having wasted the paper on which it would have been printed. It's also made me realize just how uninformed some people, even those who write books, can be. This author blames all of her woes on the book, "The Secret." She blamed that book years before it was even written. She tells us that in the beginning after reading about the Law of Attraction, she believed affirmations were all the she would need in her life to make things work for her. When that didn't work, instead of taking responsibility for her plight, she decided to place the blame squarely on the affirmations. As the author focused her life on the materialistic, the book goes on and on in describing myriad plights blaming failed affirmations. It's clear that the author didn't get the rest of the message, or the spirit of intent of the Law of Attraction, and it never occurred to her that in order to bring "things" into one's life, be it from another human being or the Universe, one has to give something of oneself in return (or even unselfishly give without expecting anything in return). Perhaps it also didn't occur to the author that what one sends out is what one gets in return--if one gives nothing, ultimately one gets nothing. From her side of the story, true thankfulness, peace, and contentment never seemed to be (and still aren't) part of this author's life. Instead, she appears to have become more bitter as she ate herself into ill health and ultimately a wheelchair; from whence she's still not able to free herself. Yet, she manages to squarely place the blame on "The Secret." I have read "The Secret", and taken in the intended spirit, it's quite inspiring as it causes one to stop and reflect on whether one has been living life to the fullest with positive thought surrounded by positive people, or if one has just been existing and always angry at their given "situation". Yes, "The Secret" talks about affirmations, but that's only a tiny part of living and being in touch with one's spiritual side. Perhaps this author should practice letting go of some of her bitterness, engaging in a bit of introspection, and accepting some responsibility for herself.Tags : Burying the Secret: The Road to Ruin Is Paved with Books about the Law of Attraction [Carol Rutter] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Burying the Secret The Road to Ruin Is Paved with Books about the Law of Attraction Carol Rutter 9780979860904 Books Reviews
It is obvious that a great deal of research went in to writing this book, as well as, a great deal of effort. The information was good, but all through the book I felt the author's anger which detracted somewhat from what she was saying. I agree with the idea behind the book but the author's anger and regret comes through and detracts from the book.
I was interested in this book because my daughter, an intelligent woman in her forties, took The Secret literally and sat around doing affirmations, waiting for the cash to drop from the sky. I agree with this author, that for some gullible types The Secret can be dangerous. And I do believe it was put together to make money. So? But what is pretty funny about the second part of the book is that the author proves that she is just as nutty without The Secret. I didn't bother to finish it, just passed it on to my daughter. God, now I hope my daughter doesn't follow the author's new belief!
I was only able to read a few pages of this book, the negativity was palitable. She seemed to be blaming the law of attraction for her problems. I believe she attracted exactly where her head was at. I have read alot of books and this one definetly has nothing worthwhile in it.
The title of the book is a bit misleading; it's less about the failures of the Law of Attraction than it is about wacky metaphysical nonsense that really doesn't have anything to do with the topic of the Law of Attraction or the Secret.
I'm not writing this review because I'm a LoA "Believer" with a capital "B" or that I'm just giving the rating I gave because of the writer doesn't like the Secret. I could care less how she feels about the LoA. I care about the writing and spending my money on items that aren't what they're advertised to be.
I was disappointed with the book because it didn't really address WHY the road to ruin is paved with books about the Law of Attraction, nor did it really bury The Secret in anything other than the writer's obvious anger at not knowing how to properly use the Law of Attraction.
I was especially disheartened about my purchase of this book the first time a reference was made to Wikipedia (and there are several references made to the website). The writer - while possibly well-intentioned - shows a certain neophyte approach to some of her topics, and then references a website that's written by people who are generally also neophytes ... or at the very least anonymous rank amateurs at research.
I can't say that I'd recommend this book to anyone. If I want bitter and angry, I'll call my ex. If I want references to old TV shows and movies, I'll watch NCIS and listen to Special Agent DiNozzo. if I want shallow vacuous research ... well, I can go to wikipedia myself.
This book didn't really work for me.
