Picture Melville's great novel channeled through a 21st century, Gothic imagination: its epic vastness running through the dark ravines of the unconscious, its high rhetoric crystalizing into lyric beauty, its indefatigable male obsession unwinding into a female vision of chance and fate, of intimacy, longing, and dark desire. Start there, and you'll have some sense of this wonderful and haunting novel. Clark invents a world as intricate and stunning as the one Melville aimed to document, and the result is a story that stays with you, lurking in the shadowy eaves of your mind like a watchful crow, long after you finish the final page.Tags : The Rathbones [Janice Clark] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. <b>A gothic, literary adventure set in New England, Janice Clark's haunting debut chronicles one hundred years of a once prosperous and now crumbling whaling family,Janice Clark,The Rathbones,Doubleday,0385536933,Family life;Fiction.,Whaling;New England;Fiction.,Young women;Fiction.,American First Novelists,American Historical Fiction,FICTION Historical General,Family life,Fiction,Fiction - Historical,Fiction Historical,Fiction Sagas,Fiction Sea Stories,Historical - General,New England,Sagas,Sea Stories,Whaling,Young women

brilliant book. The story unfolds mysteries of a family and entire community effected by their presence on the seas both in mind, tradition, spirit and body.
VERY VERY GOOD
This was more imaginative than I expected.
I think the author must have been inspired by dreams, living where she did
in Mystic, Connecticut.
It's definitely a dark book with strong sexual content so be prepared. But it kept me hooked and I would recommend it. If you're looking for an uplifting book with a happy ending...don't pick this one for your book club.
Yes, it's an odd little book but just let your imagination sail away along with Mercy on her salty hero's journey. Mix up a dark and stormy, crank up From Finner by Of Monsters and Men, and curl up with this weird and wonderful novel.
A bit strange. Some nice historic info about whaling. This family is surprisingly creepy.
I haven't slept much the last two nights as this book kept calling me back, just like the sea calls to those who have had the experience of sailing on it. As weird and wonderful and twisted a sea story as I've ever read.
