I found the first 12 chapters of this book really rough going. It was hard to connect with the characters and to understand the real issues attendant to the conflict. Additionally, there were not many genuine historical elements beyond a cursory Google search. Perhaps those details exist in the first 2 volumes that I did not read. Blessedly, the author was able to loosen up and move things along at about the mid point by using a bit more dialogue and interaction between characters. Not a terrible book, just not a great one either.Tags : Circle of Spies (Culper Ring Series) [Roseanna M. I enjoyed the tension that was woven among the history and the drama of the novel. Well worth a read, and tempts me to go back and look at the others earlier in this series.
Too much dialogue on sexual thinking and situations! It is possible to write books that talk about God and and have good inspiring story lines without putting in all the sexual inference. This is in my estimation not a clean book! Will keep up my search for really clean and inspirational reading.
This was my favorite of the series. It may have been because it was set during the Civil War, but I also found the plot to kill Lincoln interesting. I thought Slade and Mari had good chemistry. I still felt the book was somewhat lacking, and I'm not sure why. Just found myself disinterested in the end and rushing through.
Another Wow! from Roseanna M. White. This lady has more talent in her little finger than most of us have in fingers, toes--well, the whole body combined.
Marietta Hughes married the wrong man. Even though she remained loyal to her husband Lucien during their marriage, her eyes too often strayed to his brother Devereaux. Now her husband is dead, killed by muggers, and Dev steps in to claim Marietta as his own. Except a new man is also on the scene. Will Slade Osborne steal her away from Dev's schemes?
Family secrets trouble Marietta, confusing her about those she thought she knew so well and the war she thought she could ignore.
This was definitely not my favorite of Roseanna White's books. Don't get me wrong! It was interesting and fun to follow, but it was dark. I like a good villain, but in this book, I literally felt as trapped as Marietta which is a sign of an excellent story teller, I guess! This was a great series and I highly recommend it!!
Fascinating history blended with espionage and romance!
Marietta Hughes is introduced as a spoiled, selfish, reckless, embittered woman of Baltimore society and is transformed into a courageous and selfless heroine; using her incredible talents on behalf of her country. Slade Osbourne has a history of regrets and places himself at the vortex of underground conflict between the North and the South by infiltrating the dangerous Knights of the Golden Circle as an Union Pinkerton agent. Needless to say, the beautiful, enigmatic Marietta Hughes "rocks his world".
As Marietta begins to learn the truth about her late husband's family and in particular his over-possessive brother, she discovers hidden truths about her own parents and grandparents. This story quickly accelerates with many twists and turns; encapsulating a beautiful romance between two unlikely souls.
This was my first exposure to White's "Culper Ring Series" and I was enthralled by the end of the first chapter! Now I have some back-reading to do!
Marietta Arnaud Hughes appears to be a vain, flirtatious woman, but truth is catching up with her. In 1865, the Civil War is winding down, but the South isn't giving up--especially their spy rings in the North. When Marietta, a true Northern sympathizer born and raised, finds she is sitting in the center of such a Southern spy ring, her world starts spiraling. Especially as she learns more about her ex brother-in-law, an obsessive suitor.
Slade Osborne, a Pinkerton agent, is sent to infiltrate the spy ring and finds himself drawn to this beautiful widow--a complication he doesn't need.
It was commented that the love scenes in this novel go against the societal rules of that time--but this is a Romance novel!! Even though it is historical in many parts, authors are given leeway. I found the characters exhibiting a range of feelings; which, I'm sure, was true of many people's thoughts and feelings during that time when families were often split on issues.
Mrs. White, to me, does an excellent job of showing the wages of sin and the redemptive love of God as she weaves this story of love and intrigue. She does a great job of building suspense and weaving some of the characters from previous books into this story...this is a follow-up in the Culper Ring story!
The ending is a mixture of sad and happy--as the ending of the Civil War was. So, if you want suspense, daring adventure, a taste of the conflict of those times, a reminder of God's redemptive love, and romance to boot, you will enjoy this final story of the Culper Ring!
I found the first 12 chapters of this book really rough going. It was hard to connect with the characters and to understand the real issues attendant to the conflict. Additionally, there were not many genuine historical elements beyond a cursory Google search. Perhaps those details exist in the first 2 volumes that I did not read.
