This was absolutely amazing. It's a dark, dark book but full of beauty and hope, too. I haven't read anything like it before. The teenage feet on the cover mimic so many other YA adult books filled with coming out, angsty or cute romance story lines. Do NOT go into this thinking it will be the same light read. It does have an f/f romance, a strong one at that, but this book is more about how Jessie affects everyone around her, with Mia as her anchor, and how they affect her in turn. The narrative isn't about being lesbian, there is no "coming out", they just are.
"The Moment" is not a predictable story line, is incredibly intimate and completely spellbinding.
I have to give kudos to the author for going to such a dark place and staying there for the entirety of the book, revealing her story in such a beautiful way. She should really get her props, not only for balancing the book with amazing characters but choosing to tell the story in 2nd person and breaking grammatical rules, selecting styles that told us more than the words on the page. Again, just amazing.
And, though the lead characters are teenagers I wouldn't call this a YA book, either. Regardless of a reader's age, it grabs you by the shirt collar and holds you until the final page. And, yes, there are abuse triggers in this book
Read it.

The Moment edition by TC Anderson Zoe Michalak Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
excited to finally read this story in its entirety. although the story does contain a well-written, dark, angst ridden plot, that is not the standout for me. what i find so intriguing about this story are the moments of love that are so powerfully described in a paragraph, a line, a word, and all the spaces. the love between family, friends, and of course, between two people that have stars in their eyes. it's truly a reminder of what you can overcome when you got people who care.
Dare you to buy it and not feel something.
As a person who tip toes around emotions, this book destroyed me. It MADE me feel. It's impossible to read this book and be apathetic. It pulls. You will immediately become invested in the characters. That is something that is hard to accomplish in just one book. It breaks you. The story is gut-wrenching. It makes you smile. The ending, even the beginning, moves you.
I have been meaning to read this book for a bit now. I hadn’t read the reviews because I wanted to form my own opinions about the book and the authors writing style. A part of me is kicking myself because there are some strong trigger warnings. The author doesn't shy away from emotional subject material. This is admirable, but be warned; there are some strong scenes throughout the book.
That being said, the book itself was moving and believable. I think that some of the subject matter called for the author to be very direct and sometimes blunt and she doesn’t disappoint. Within the first two chapters, you become passionately invested in these characters and their futures. Although second person point of view is my least favorite format, I think it was a smart choice for this book and that it helps the reader connect with the characters very quickly.
My journey to the end of this story was emotional. I want to avoid too many spoilers but if you are looking for a touching and inspirational story, I would recommend that you pick up this book.
I was glad this book popped up on my recommendations or I would have never had the pleasure of reading it. Be warned though, this book has several grammatical errors and I am not talking about the ones that I think were done on intentionally. The book synopsis does nothing to help tell what the book is about so I'll give a real quick rundown... "The Moment" is story told from two different points of view, Mia (rich, genius, who is basically raising herself) and Jessica (abandoned, invisible, alone). The two come together after being assigned partners and form an instant connection with one another...and that's when s*** starts to hit the fan.
While reading this book, I felt like I was reading a book for English class, where you need to analyze not only the character's actions but even the author's actions...think Faulkner if you will. It almost seemed as if when looking from Jess's POV, writing was done as a stream of thought. From Mia, for the most part, it was done more proper if you will. Regardless, this book has ups and downs, it will make you happy and cry...a bit melodramatic but it works for the book. The romance of the two girls is a none issues and not really even a focus of the book in the sense of romance...the focus is more on connection. I highly recommend it.
Wish I had twenty five hundred and two stars to put up on the board because it is that good.
What a beautiful, heart wrenching story. I cried, celebrated her victories, cried some more, got angry, and wanted to shake everyone that didn’t see, didn’t look beyond, lash out at that man and that thing of a .. what kind of sick bitch does this to her own child?!
This effects all of us and to think that people don’t want to “get involved” that’s the biggest load of crap and I’m not saying this doesn’t happen because it does and we still do nothing. Well not all of us because we’re not all monsters.
I really hope to read more books from this author. If I was crying by reading, I can imagine what you must have been doing while writing this book. No one can read this story and not cry, not want some justice, and not want to reach out and help someone. It makes you want to be a better person and hopefully we can do more by looking beyond and not ignoring the little things. I stand up and give you thanks.
